Helen Storrow Seminar begins its mission for a greener planet
19 April 2010
The opening ceremony for the Helen Storrow Seminar took place on Sunday evening at Our Chalet, despite transport difficulties for many participants. Ten young women from Australia, Denmark, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, UK and USA gathered at Our Chalet in Switzerland for the five day seminar. They are learning leadership development skills with particular emphasis on taking the lead on environmental issues.
Many potential participants had their flights cancelled or redirected due to the ash cloud emitted by a volcano in Iceland that has covered much of European airspace. The situation with volcano and air travel has made the participants more aware of the environment and nature’s impact on the technology that we take for granted.
The participants have already connected and bonded well. They will be extending their knowledge and challenging themselves during the next few days. They are learning about WAGGGS and the environment, and will be working on creating action plans for the future. We hope they’ll return home ready to make a start on an environmental project with the help of their Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting organization. Liz Smith, chair of the planning team |
You can find out how the participants are getting on by reading their daily updates.
Liz Smith offered some consolation to those young women that were forced to miss the seminar, "Obviously disappointing that so many participants are unable to be here. We look forward to a future event on the same theme that they can attend. It will build on the outcomes of this seminar and will be open to young women aged 18 – 24 years."
The team at Our Chalet are hoping to host an additional leadership development seminar in December 2010. If you are a young woman interested in representing your Association at this event, please contact |

Whatever the environment is global or local, it is the air around that makes us live our lives - so I send my best wishes for a wonderful experience to those who made it to Switzerland, and to those who did not succeed to go this time - I hope that you will be able to join within shortly.
For everybody, I know you learned something about challenges and yourself.
best wishes,
Anne Rise, Leadership Development Consultant, WAGGGS
